Itagaki may die, but liberty never!

What is Liberalism? Liberalism is a belief of importance of liberty and equality arguing that private individuals had a fundamental right to life, liberty, and property. I will promise you the abolition of the Han system and raise this new idea of liberalism to benefit the people.
Basic InformationCount Itagaki Taisuke was born from a middle-class samurai family. He quickly rose in power and became the sobayonin, a councilor, charge of accounts and military matters of Edo in 1861. He joined forces with Saigo Takamori to overthrow the Shogun in the upcoming Meiji Restoration. He was appointed as a Councilor of State in 1869, but resigned in 1873, due to the disagreement of the government's policy of restraint towards Korea. So he and Goto Shojiro, Eto Shimpei, and Soejima Taneomi formed the Aikoku Koto, the Public Party of Patriots. He and his associations created a variety of organizations to combine the samurai ethos with the Western idea, liberalism. In 1878, he took part in the Freedom and People's Rights Movement which followed to a failed assassination of Itagaki Taisuke.

Explanation of SloganAs an important politician of the Liberal party, Itagaki Taisuke had many enemies who did not support his new idea of equality and liberty. In 1882, he was almost assassinated by a right-wing militant. He then says one of his famous quotes: "Itagaki may die, but liberty never!" This exemplifies how strongly he thinks of his idea of liberalism. It sounds like he doesn't care that if he dies because his idea of liberalism will go on.
